We’ve been hearing a lot about iBeacon and Bluetooth-powered devices with low power in the retail sector, where stores are starting to deploy support for beacons in order to improve communication with customers through applications, allowing them to share deals , send alerts, and advertise to consumers. But according to a new report from ABI Research, retail is – surprisingly – is not the biggest market for this new technology. In fact, it is the smallest.

Apple beacons, referred to as iBeacons are hardware devices that can be detected by mobile devices, and more specifically by mobile applications that run on their devices. Apple iBeacon devices used to track where customers are in their stores, for example. Shopkick has been testing the technology with Macy. Beacons are also being used in some grocery stores!

While the beacons do not actively tracked in the Big Brother sense of the word, this type of functionality is increasingly include mobile applications in the future, leaving consumers to opt out by turning off the support of an application for location services, Bluetooth or off, or just uninstall the application from your smartphone.

For an app like Shopkick, consumers probably understand on some level – even if you do not understand the nuances of the technology itself – that the application is able to identify when they are in front of the store when they are not.

But today, companies are only beginning to develop codes of conduct for how this technology is used and how consumer privacy is respected. So, like many other technological advances, the rapid growth in the market iBeacon / BLE devices could mean that the technology is spreading faster than our ability to reach the necessary rules about consumer protections. (See also:.!? Mechanisms mobile advertising opt-out, for instance identifier Quick How advertising is disabled in your iPhone Surely you know that one, right?)

In any case, the estimate of the ABI in 2019, created a market shipments BLE 60 million units * should not be taken lightly. Especially when the (possibly useful) implementation iBeacon / BLE devices in retail stores is the appearance of smaller market. Commercial / corporate, asset tracking and markets can be larger personal location, ABI believes.

“In terms of construction, many stores are relatively small compared to a corporate office or hospital, while items that are tracked by example, consumers are already BLE enable through their smartphones, which further limits number of beacons needed, “writes ABI senior analyst Patrick Connolly. “The ability to take clear ROI and efficiency to these vertical markets without the need to increase things like basket size, means that this could become an area of great importance for companies to focus on.”

Imagine if you promise iBeacons in the workplace: integrates with HR systems, companies can automatically attach wages always taking long lunches!

In addition, ABI says there is also “huge potential” in the connected home and personal asset tracking through iBeacon / BLE technology. “Let’s see emerging networking silos beacons in the next five years,” Connolly says, “and big companies like Apple and Google have to consider adding this in a coherent system, creating new revenue opportunities.”

A number of companies have begun to move into the connected home space, including Apple and Google (with HomeKit and Nido), as well as plenty of new and small businesses. These hardware and software vendors are not all using iBeacon / BLE technology today, but will be even easier for them to do in the future, if they wish, as they are cheaper headlights. ABI notes that the beacons have “gone already declining significantly in price.”

In fact, the figure of 60 million above device will only result in less than $ 500 million in hardware revenues, said ABI.

The firm believes that the magnitude of the connected home market potentially makes it the largest, if the technology is adopted by the public as expected.

However, it is worth noting that when ABI says retail market is the smallest, are talking in terms of shipments. If you are going to consider the opportunities that the total revenue, retail will remain the largest market, says Connolly, given the potential for around analysis, CRM and advertising as headlights taken for things like indoor location, labeled electronic shelves, smart phone applications, and mobile payments.

These are aligned to create “the perfect platform for a new way to both store and sell,” he says.

* To clarify, in case of confusion: ABI is only counting shipments BLE beacon capabilities with dedicated location / proximity to reach the figure of 60 million, not the BLE-enabled devices like the iPhone, Samsung Galaxy, etc. Obviously, doubling in phones like mean that the number would be much, much higher.

The iBeacon, a small device with low cost Bluetooth that connects to smartphones consumers as they pass within several hundred feet of an installation, has been hailed as a landmark in the latest evolution of marketing based on location. It is now possible to target the exact location of the shoppers in the store, and feed them messages, coupons or discounts depending on your location. But for consumers, it is this creepy or cool?

IBeacons circumvent the expense of Wi-Fi and GPS errors focus on the interior, integrated devices with iOS or Android July 4 and up. They can be placed anywhere, apparently including shops, hotels, stadiums, museums, amusement parks and airports, to guide people along their journey in real time.

Smartphone adoption and use mobile application offers advertisers the opportunity to attract consumers when they are near a brand or point of interest in real time by targeting specific location. comScore data show that Americans spend more time using mobile apps than browsing the PC. The next generation of mobile shoppers, 18-24, spend two thirds of their time online using a smartphone or tablet. According to eMarketer, 32 percent of smartphone users use mobile applications for shopping at least monthly. Moreover, the Adobe Digital Index shows that consumers use smartphone apps more than twice to visit mobile websites, and use of the application exceeds the mobile web visits in an average of 100 minutes per month .

But let’s face it: A brand we know where you are sending messages based on their whereabouts can be annoying or downright creepy. Since companies will test the functionality iBeacon is essential to establish trust, which will further drive the adoption of iBeacon and create deeper engagement between consumers and brands.

Create Transparency Opt-In

It is easy to agree to receive based on location when installing or updating an application messages, but exactly what kind of messages? Vendors developing applications that integrate with iBeacon should work closely with legal departments and communicate clearly what kind of messages will be sent and how the information collected will be used. Everyone wants convenience, discounts and helpful information, but the reality is that some people are too sensitive to share information. IBeacon A successful program must create an exchange of clear value to make the offering convincingly that unfounded fears subsided privacy on the first screen.

Equip staff with knowledge

It can be disassembled to get to a store intending to buy a big-ticket item that has been carefully investigated to find you know a lot more about what the sales associate. Increasingly shoppers read reviews and price comparisons of behavior and characteristics in advance. The sales associate becomes a guide to show the items and convey real-world knowledge that online research leaves off. At a time when buyers have the ability to assess their retail experiences and products, knowledgeable and friendly staff are the gateway to positive reviews, and customer loyalty.

The surprise and delight to the usefulness and fun

Contextual relevance is key. A grocery shopper may seek agreement on an ingredient of a recipe stored on Epicurious, a traveler may prefer mobile registration functionality, and a visitor to a site attractions such as The World of Coca-Cola can have frames and backgrounds custom for family photos. While participation possibilities are limitless, marketers must understand each step in the customer journey and provide contextually relevant to the location specific functionality.

For example, in April and WWE iBeacons used their mobile application to encourage fan participation in its biggest event, Wrestlemania. Fans at the convention center in New Orleans could be notified about when and where your favorite stars of wrestling would be available for autograph signings. The application users benefited from a place in line ahead of those who do not use the application.

Do not underestimate the value of perpetually connected consumer. Thirty-two percent of shoppers already use mobile business applications, and are waiting and willing to test applications based on proximity, because we seek and expect marketing messages. Do not risk losing them by not taking iBeacons, especially if your competitor has. They are the early adopters who inform their early efforts and give you the data needed to improve and expand programs.

predictions

iBeacon will become an integral part of the consumer experience almost all businesses. It’s the future, and marketers have to figure out how to use this technology for tomorrow, today, in the most efficient manner. I predict the end of 2015 all major U.S. stadium or place will become “conscious light” in their attempt to improve participation fan of smartphone users in the play, concert or event. Displays current beacons for first users in the United States, such as the NFL, MLB, NBA and WWE, with the successful implementation of Adobe beacon in the London summit will show that the beacons global. Retailers and shopping malls are next – that beacons are deployed on a larger scale in mid-2015 The challenge is both technological and human centered: brands must determine how to integrate location technologies with existing storage systems,. and to educate and train store personnel.

As an advocate of longstanding mobile strategy first, I iBeacons have the potential to revolutionize not only marketing, but to bring the devices location awareness of its potential. iBeacons become our personal assistants in smartphones that enrich our lives by helping us complete activities, informing us about what is right in front of our eyes, and facilitation of shared experiences.

Ray Pun is strategic marketing advantage of mobile marketing solutions through the cloud of Adobe Marketing.

IT provider Sita has started using new technologies such as Apple iBeacon to provide real-time information on mobile devices to help passengers move seamlessly through the airport board flights on time. American Airlines has become the first airline to test the commonly used registration mark Sita, launched at the recent summit Sita Air Transport IT in Brussels. A six-month pilot program to Dallas / Fort Worth iBeacons use 100 – the largest deployment ever and a precursor to a permanent application in eight centers.

Sita iBeacons installs supported by Apple on the walls of airports; are approximately one inch in diameter and have a range of 2 meters to 100 meters. The iBeacons use little energy and geofencing Bluetooth to enable the display of relevant to the location of the passenger information devices.

After the disappearance of Malaysia Airlines Flight 370 Sita has begun trials of six months with several airlines, while the use of technology already installed on the aircraft to provide advanced monitoring capabilities. System operations center Airlines (Aircom) flight tracking server combines server with future air navigation system (Fans) ground application already installed in many aircraft. “So the solution does not require much additional cost or investment by airlines,” vice president of solutions Sita aircraft Philip Clinch told AIN. Sita has presented the IATA system.

Sita recognized the need for an integrated industry while working at various international airports approach. Common usage record beacon defines standard data sets and types of beacons to be placed on the doors, shopping areas or checkpoints. It gives the industry a single point of contact for common use beacons deployed at any airport in the world. “With him, airports can share metadata with airlines and other partners and allow passengers to receive accurate and relevant information,” said SITA CTO Jim Peters.

Now, American Airlines has begun discussions with members of One World, British Airways and Japan Airlines to share registration beacon, director of American Airlines mobile application and wearables Easter Phillip told AIN.

Sita has also completed trials using Google Glass and smart to Virgin Atlantic staff serve premium customers at airports clock. “I hope, with the development of flexible displays, wrap ‘mini-tablets’ actually more suitable sleeve in an agent or cabin staff could develop,” Peters said. Yet Shashank Nigam, founder of SimpliFlying , warns that too many applications could be a challenge for the airlines. “We must be careful not to exceed” he said.

Meanwhile, Sita, who completed the complex integration of Air India and Indian Airlines two years ago, has been instrumental in the integration of Sabre Air India system Amadeus platform in the Star Alliance. The carrier joins the star on July 11.

If the writing was not on the wall since the use of beacons approach to both the child was the future, now we have some data to back it up.

According to a study by InMarket, use of beacons (brands such as Apple iBeacons, and has already sold millions of devices capable) in retail stores led to a 19x increase in the advertised products interact with a 16.5x increase in use of apps in the store and a 6.4x increase in the probability that a buyer holds an application that sends a message of the mark on their phones.

These statistics are very impressive. InMarket says that measures the interactions that customers are reaping the physical products and barcode scanning. No information about the raw numbers, of course, but if these improvements could be added to existing phones efforts, marketers have a great opportunity here.

InMarket, an advertising platform that is now focused on mobile and beacons, launched one of the largest networks of these devices sensitive proximity to retail buyers earlier this year and has continued to expand its facilities. InMarket conducted the study in a controlled sample of 25,000 buyers from over 30 days in April and May this year, the use of mobile applications that had Mortar framework installed.

Beacons installed in stores like Saks or grocery outlets can send alerts based on proximity to buyers at the right time – and the location – you are empowered to make a decision on a purchase. This is the holy grail of commercial advertising, which normally has a scattergun approach to advertising buyers before ‘or try to guess when you are in the vicinity of a product.

Where a headlamp know you’re within a few feet of the rice mixture a Zatarain and sends you a coupon, which can be much more effective than trying to mail a coupon for one month prior to the remote possibility that you might be in the mood for Creole.

These initial statistics InMarket are especially promising for retailers anyway.

The Contextual Shopping Era

“This is the first data collected from a lighthouse showing scale deployment beacons will become commonplace and accepted by users when applied correctly,” said CEO Todd Dipaola InMarket in response to questions from TechCrunch. “There will be some winners and losers in deploying successful strategies beacon. Winners will help your phone behaves like a janitor with personalized answers and advice just as you need it. Others who try to make the phone a salesman used car and send pushes just because they can, will struggle to reach an audience. ”

This idea that you do not have to hunt around to proactively coupons or offers is an idea I’ve been following for a while – that contextual data is pushed to the future users of mobile phones. The precision Beacons offer, along with data from advertisers, manufacturers and retailers, will make this more effective and less annoying.

Instead of breaking with notifications just because you may be near a store, the precision of a laser beacon notification using contextual cues to talk to you when it matters.

Note, of course, I’m talking about everything from the perspective of an advertiser or seller here. I’m not entirely comfortable with the scope of the data and the context advertisers will have me in the next couple of years. However, the ‘pro’ part is that you get bombarded with less garbage that does not really matter. And if you are worried about your location being tracked, then you should probably stop carrying a smartphone.

I am sure that the advocacy groups and consumer watchdogs of Congress will have a lot of work to do regulating this area in the coming years.

Dipaola notes in accordance with the movement of Apple to randomly change the ID of devices to Wi-Fi networks, which moves away from WiFi tracking (which has privacy controls) and beacons actually has some benefits different privacy .

“For retailers, the beacons not only improve the buyer experience, but allow privacy Store design analysis. 8 end wifi iOS instore analysis in favor of exclusion in solutions as indicators.”

Anyway, back to where we can take. Dipaola ordered to describe what a store experience might be like in the future-ready beacon context sensitive.

Let’s go shopping in 2020 for a moment. It’s only 5 and a half years away, but could be dramatically different. You walk into the store, let’s say the produce section, and is remembered on the apples are in season and are more mature this week, how much they weigh and how much they will cost. Since you previously Bookmark a recipe for apple pie, a mark InMarket pings your device with an offer of pie crust. Heading into the hall and pick up the ice cream freezer – where fitness BLE application informs you that because you did 4 miles on the treadmill in the morning, you can add a few ounces of vanilla in your daily calorie budget. Speaking to the cereal aisle, thanks to the proximity wishlist application / pantry tells his wife that Special K added to the list this morning. Oh, and watch the X cereals because you have indicated that you are allergic to nuts. Finally, it leaves the shop through the toll lanes of EZ-Pass style using the BLE payments to debit your card, so no waiting in line. Just show your receipt as you walk through the door.

DiPaola said that everything described is possible with beacons and mobile hardware, and data shows that purchasers InMarket really want that.

And not only retail stores, either. EventBase, Urban Airship and the Mobile Marketing Association are covering the Cannes Lions Festival – an atavistic tribute to marketing manipulation that took place in France this week – with beacons that activate polls and surveys Festival official app. The application will also allow attendees to keep track of each other in real time with the ‘Around Me function “in the culmination of a thousand applications wet dream the concept of” local social.

The strong presence in the application and in the event is no accident, of course. Beacons are considered the next frontier for marketers, and demonstrate its accuracy and power in the event of hot year industry is smart for companies like Urban Airship EventBase and who are taking advantage of the field.

I’m not sure how good I am with how the business is shaping was contextual, but is coming.

As iBeacons market becomes more and more competitive the prices start to drop. An example for that is the beacon in iblue beacon pack with 9 year battery life and 60 meter range. The high-end beacon was available by now only in limited quantities and for no less than $100 each, very interesting option as it can save a lot of on the maintenance.

We just spotted recently a huge discount available on that beacon, on sale now for only $59.95 offered by BUYibeacons.NET here: http://buyibeacons.net/index.php/9year-battery-ibeacons-long-life-beacons.html

The parameters are also very promising. 9 year iBlue beacon package, Water Resistant, 200 ft Range, SNF beacon, Security Encryption, RM CORTEX MO, TX output calibrated to +I- 1dBM, fully customizable, optional: Buzzer, LED.

There are also few other beacons at BUYibeacons.NET which seems to be the world’s first marketplace for ibeacons but we expect more like that to emerge soon.
